Letters and News

رسائل وأخبار

Under this heading we open space for all the letters and news that reach the editorial office of "The Woman's Voice."

Literary and press circles have given the bold venture undertaken by "The Woman's Voice" a warm welcome, which has expressed itself by word of mouth, in the pages of the newspapers, in the letters arriving at the management, and in the great eagerness to buy the magazine or subscribe to it. We count all of this as encouragement that spurs us to press forward in fulfilling the mission for which this magazine was founded.

On June 22 we were left for New York by Dr. Jamal Karam Harfush, wife of the Ustad who is proprietor of "al-Hadith," chief examining physician at the hospitals of the American University, and the distinguished woman of letters of whom the American parliamentary delegation that recently visited our country spoke, praising her accomplishments.

Dr. Harfush is the first Lebanese lady to go to specialize in the universities of the United States in her branch, "pediatrics," by agreement with the American University of Beirut and the cultural attaché of the American Legation.

It was she who organized the children's exhibition this year and last year in "West Hall," where it won brilliant success. She is one of the founders of the Lebanese Red Cross and of the Lebanese Women's League, which she represented at the conference of the Eastern Women's Union in Cairo, where she was elected a member of its permanent committee.

We have received from Miss Afaf Abd al-Samad, teacher of French at the Islamic Makassed College in Sidon, an article entitled "Woman and Her Rights in Society," in which she defended woman, drew attention to her importance in building society, and sought to demonstrate her equality with man in all kinds of work. Would that there had been room for it in this issue; the reader would then have found in it both pleasure and profit.

We have also received the charming address delivered by Miss Widad Najib Saliba at the celebration held by the Zahle Women's Renaissance to inaugurate the kindergarten in Zahle, in welcome to the gracious lady visitors from among the members of the Arab Women's Union. In this address shone forth the spirit of Zahle, adorned with generosity, sincerity, and ardor in the path of duty.

The "Child Welfare" committee of the Lebanese Arab Women's Federation in Beirut held a reception at the Children's Home situated in the Musaytbeh quarter, attended by a large gathering of invited ladies. After they had toured the sections of the home and heard the children's songs, speeches were given by Mrs. Zahia Salman, president of the Child Welfare Committee; Mrs. Mona Fakhoury, secretary of the committee; and Mrs. Rose Shahfa, president of the Women's Union, who donated the sum of twenty-five liras in aid of the committee.

The Child Welfare Committee has resolved to open a second children's home in the Ashrafieh quarter, and a third in the Khandaq al-Ghamiq quarter; it has been pursuing its efforts for six years now to spread these homes throughout the various districts of the Lebanese capital, to bring cheer to neglected children.

Light has lined with kohl the eyes of a firstborn child of Mrs. Sumayya Khawli Nawfal, whom she has named "Jihad"; and lo, the glad tidings brought delight to the heart of every relative and friend, and prayers rose from the lips that his blessings may endure in the sheltering shade of his parents.

There has come to us from our correspondent in Tripoli a description of the certificate-distribution ceremony of the American School for Girls. It reports that the number of graduates this year is 27, something without precedent in the history of the school. It also reports that the address of the ceremony

a little play in a single act, and everything there promised great success in helping the child and raising his condition.

— On Monday the 17th of this month, a large company of former graduates of the American School for Girls held a reception in honor of this year's graduates. The celebration was opened by Miss Nadwa Massouh, president of the association, with a word of welcome, followed by some songs from certain of the members. The president closed the celebration by distributing the association's silver badge to the new graduates.

in which shone forth the Lebanese generosity and taste that are embodied in the widow of the great departed.

And there has come to us from our correspondent in Tripoli the following:
The Child Welfare Home of the Children's Welfare Society held a small celebration on Wednesday and Thursday, the 19th and 20th of this month, attended by Mrs. Heneni Tarcha, president of the Lebanese Women's League, together with a select company of the ladies of Beirut and the children's families. After the directress of the school, Miss Najla Qassis, had welcomed the guests, the children performed some rhythmic dances, among them the "dabke," and acted

Mrs. Widad Maqdisi Cortas, filled the hearts of the women of Tripoli with pride and delight, as one of the daughters of their sex won immense admiration for the profound and perceptive address she delivered.

Mrs. Rose Zakkour held a "cocktail" party in honor of Lebanon's great guests: Makram Pasha, Hafez Ramadan Pasha, and Dr. Hussein Haykal Pasha. It was attended by a noble company of statesmen, notables, politicians, men of letters, and distinguished Lebanese families. The party was of the utmost splendor,
