Do You Love Your Child?

Loving a child does not mean pampering and coddling him, but rather providing him with the means of cultivation.

The most important of these means is to place in his hands reading books that combine pleasure with profit. And in view of our severe lack of such books, the Alumnae Association of the American College for Girls in Beirut, together with the Arab Cultural Club, has decided to begin a campaign to obtain reading books for children. It proposes to everyone with some acquaintance with the teaching or training of children that he take an interest in preparing reading books for children aged 5–7, that is, at the start of a child's reading.

And this in the simplest possible language, that is, as close as can be to the spoken tongue: short in its phrases, connected in its ideas, divided into paragraphs; its subject stories, drawn from the environment of the country; full of concrete words capable of illustration, that is, words denoting movement, sound, color, shape, smell, touch, and taste, so as to leave room for many colored pictures, and for whatever enters into our children's observation and experience of animals, things, occupations, games, persons, and imagination.

The last date for accepting books is October 15, 1946. A participant in the project may submit more than one book, and booklets in series are accepted.

The size of the booklet is from 600 to 700 words, and 25 liras will be paid for it if it wins acceptance.
