The Sailor's Return

The Cinema

The screen star Annabella lives with her husband Tyrone Power in a splendid house counted among the loveliest and most tasteful homes of Hollywood at the present time. Whoever enters it feels that he is in a paradise, or in a dream.

Tyrone bought the house six months before his marriage to Annabella, in the year 1939. After their marriage the two set to work laying out its garden and paving its walks with brick. Then there is a small swimming pool that bespeaks a sound and delicate taste.

The atmosphere of the house is quiet in the extreme; whoever enters it feels its cleanliness and good order. There is the library, where a man may withdraw by himself with his truest friend, with nothing to trouble his peace. Everything that surrounds the beholder tells of great taste and of a strong endeavor to return to the gay, active life to which the couple were accustomed, after they came out of that sweeping war and were reunited in their little paradise, which they arranged for its comfort and its quiet.

Tyrone has returned to the screen once more, after deserting it for a period of four years, and he is very glad of this, for his pleasure in work and his longing for it are great. That pleasure began in his childhood, for his mother was a brilliant actress, as was his father, who appeared often in Shakespeare's plays. In his youth Tyrone met with great difficulties in finding work for himself on the stage, and was refused by several companies; but at last a certain lady interceded for him and helped him to act in small pieces, in which he proved his mastery of the work and his precision in acting. At one gathering the director of the Twentieth Century-Fox company saw him and signed a contract with him for seven years' service, in the course of which he met the beloved actress Annabella and acted with her in 'The Suez Canal'; and after that they were married, in April 1939.

In 1941 the United States declared war on Japan, and in 1942 Tyrone volunteered in the American navy, leaving the screen behind him, as did others among the actors who took their part in fighting dictatorship.

And now Tyrone has come back to Hollywood after an absence. He has come back, but as was his old way; for the many trials and the numerous experiences he met with have taught him lessons he will never forget. Today he can fly an airplane and fight in the air, and he knows how to look after himself and after those in his charge. He is glad of his return, and of the experiences that taught him how to fight for his country's beliefs and principles. He has come back to his gaiety and his jokes, which are a part of his personality — that solid personality which will one day have its place in the front rank of those who work to preserve world peace.
