For Elegance and Beauty

في سبيل الأناقة والجمال

Your beauty, O woman—which the world today looks upon as an ideal beauty—may be summed up in several points, and it becomes you to acquaint yourself with their truths, if you wish to be elegant.

1 — Your figure: Keep your figure slender, with rounded shoulders and hips...
For this year's modern fashion, with its dresses tending toward length, is intent on seeing woman slim of waist, and it enjoins upon ladies the keeping slim of these two regions, which are the focal point toward which the gaze is drawn... And do not take fright, Madam, at a little plumpness on your hips, for in their roundness lies a charm no other charm can rival... and modern taste finds it becoming and prefers it to utter thinness...

2 — Your hair: This year's view of the hair has changed a little from last year's: the taste for a great many waves has lessened, and fashion now leans toward shorter hair, with persistent use of a stiff brush to preserve its softness. As for the direction of combing, it is forward; the hair should be short, with few waves over the brow, the ears covered by short, soft, well-brushed locks. And when day turns to night and it pleases women to bring out the meanings of their femininity, then it is becoming to set a rose, or a few flowers, high in the hair. For in them are the meanings of tender inclinations, which woman feels but refuses to proclaim aloud!!

3 — The face: Making up the face is the most delicate of operations, and it is not so simple a matter as some women may imagine... Let the color of the rouge used on your cheeks be in harmony with your lipstick; taste this year inclines toward the bright "rose" shade, provided it agrees with the color of the cheeks, for their harmony is to a very great degree an essential condition.

4 — The eyes: The eyes were, and remain, the most important feature of the face; this being so, you must uphold the importance of their station. The lady of this year goes to great lengths in caring for the beauty of her eyes and in perfecting the shadows around them—especially at evening time—lest the gaze go first to the mouth, for the brilliance of its color, and rob the eyes of their first place! Let the "shadows" you use be in harmony with the color of your eyes, and you would do best to consult a specialist in the art of beauty to guide you, at least the first time. Apply the shadow to the upper lid, working from below upward, lightening the shade as you go higher. Do not touch the lower lid. As for your lashes, tinting them a color that suits the color of your hair brings them out to the eye and makes them appear longer and thicker than they really are... If your lashes are straight, take the help of the special lash brush; it is best used while the lashes are moist with mascara. Keep on with the brush until the lashes dry, and they will stay curled. It is better not to touch the lashes of the lower lid, lest this give you a look of artifice, which no elegant lady would accept for herself—so beware of it, and do not forget!

5 — The hands: Let your care for your hands be greater than it was before. Strive by every means you know to keep them always soft and white. Contrive to hide the traces of the many labors and tasks you perform, which may mar the beauty of your hands; keep your nails long and cleanly trimmed, and let their red be exactly the red of your lipstick. Observe all these rules, then, Madam, if you would be elegant...
