Lake

Andrée Chedid

Lac · Andrée Chedid

Lake that remakes the tree or the face
With so much truth
With so little love
For love sings like a lie
Makes of the bird a legend
Of the tree a poem
And of a face, Love
Lake that froze the bird, the tree, or the face
Within their poor contours
Lake so heavy with truth
And so light with love
Do not gaze into the cold water of the lake
Bird, tree, or you, face
But go rather toward the eye of man
To live there all your lives
