The Exodus of al-Andalus

هجرة الاندلس

A valley shielded us from the scorching noonday's breath,
a valley watered by doubled, generous rains.

We alighted beneath its spreading boughs, and it bent over us
with the tenderness of nursing mothers over the weanling.

It gave us, in our thirst, sweet clear water to sip,
more delicious than wine to the boon companion.

It turns the sun away whenever it faces us,
veiling it, yet giving leave to the breeze.

Its pebbles startle the jewel-decked maidens,
who reach to touch their well-strung necklaces.
