The Visit of Dona Eleonora Mendes de Barros

زيارة الدونا اليونورا مندس دياروس

★ At the end of last month Lebanon was visited by Dona Eleonora Mendes de Barros, the First Lady of Brazil, wife of the governor of the state of São Paulo, the second man of the country.

Mrs. de Barros made her visit to Syria, Lebanon, and Transjordan in her personal, not her official, capacity, accompanied by her daughter and her son-in-law.

The gracious visitor and her party met a warm welcome from those Lebanese who had been in Brazil — special mention going to Mrs. Salwa Mahfouz, the gracious Lebanese emigrant whose arrival from São Paulo we have already reported: she gave in her honor a splendid dinner party which brought together a distinguished elite of Lebanese, and invited her also to visit the Cedars and Baalbek, where the qaimaqam went to great lengths in welcoming her — this at the prompting of the government, which hastened, as soon as the news reached it, to honor this great personage: for the friendship she bears the Lebanese emigrants in São Paulo, and for the encouragement with which she strengthens their charitable projects there.

And Mrs. de Barros returned to her country carrying within her a great deal of admiration and appreciation for the natural beauty of Lebanon... and for its people.
