Dr. Jamal Karam in Zahle

On to the delicious foods to devour and the iced refreshments to sip — all of them plentiful and tasty... Then comes the turn of the theatrical stage, while the music never ceases playing except for an important announcement or a piece of happy news...

We hurried to the performance hall, with its rhythms and its splendid, comical acting, then went off to a small market where we bought the loveliest and least expensive of the wares on display from charming saleswomen among the Girl Guides.

The sun sank toward the horizon while we stood absorbed, as though dreaming — and the dream was so sweet we did not want to wake from it... Then suddenly the loudspeaker raised its voice and we heard words of welcome and farewell in one breath from the Chief Commander, Miss In'am al-Saghir. We awoke at this call and knew that the time to depart had come, and that there was no escaping leaving the place, much as we did not wish to — but what could be done... So we departed, our tongues repeating the poet's words:

Not all that a man wishes for does he attain;
the winds blow contrary to what the ships desire.

Dr. Jamal Karam Harfush accepted the invitation of the Zahle Women's Renaissance to deliver a lecture before a large audience of the ladies and men of the Valley's Neighbor.

At six o'clock in the evening precisely, Dr. Jamal arrived in Zahle, where she was received by the president and members of the administrative committee at the kindergarten, where the directress, her teachers, and the pupils were also there to receive them. The Doctor, who takes great interest in the cause of the Lebanese child and his care, listened to the songs and charming dialogues performed by the little pupils, and was greatly pleased by the intelligence, liveliness, and diligence evident in every one of the children — a speaking testimony to the interest and care that the administration and the association devote to our tender blossoms, the mainstay of tomorrow. Then they proceeded together to the Qadri Hotel, where a delicious lunch had been prepared for them. After they had taken some rest and viewed the many improvements and artistic embellishments with which the hotel's management is welcoming the joyous summer, they gathered in the hotel's spacious hall, which filled with a distinguished elite of people of culture and taste.

The president of the association introduced Dr. Jamal with a fine address in which she enumerated the Doctor's gifts and her works in the two fields of medicine and social endeavor. The audience then listened to a beautiful and instructive lecture on the subject of "Woman's Mission in the Care of Motherhood and Childhood," in which the lecturer soared, as is her custom, and to which the audience listened with the fullest attention.

In conclusion there came a splendid commentary by the great poet Ustad Said Akl, which made the loveliest impression. And the audience departed in gratitude, asking for more of these gatherings that lift the soul into spacious realms of scholarly and moral elevation.
