A Lebanese Women's Renaissance on the Gold Coast

★ From Mr. Joseph Risha on the Gold Coast we have received the following:

During these past two years there have appeared in the society of the Mahjar the first signs of a blessed women's renaissance, one that inspires good hope and optimism. In Kumasi — on the Gold Coast — the Lebanese Women's Union was lately founded under the presidency of Mrs. Thurayya Maatouk.

Nor has the renaissance been confined to the Women's Union alone; it has embraced every side of social life and created a new patriotic spirit: from the devising of great charitable projects, to the holding of splendid Lebanese and Western entertainments, to effective cooperation with the Red Cross organization, to the collecting of donations for the poor of the mother homeland.

A school has likewise lately been founded for the teaching of the Arabic language, to instill the patriotic spirit in the hearts of the young, out of care to keep the traditions alive in the minds of the new generation, lest they be lost amid the various Western currents.

For all this, woman has earned thanks and praise, and has proved that she is worthy to carry heavy burdens. May God uphold our women who strive in the cause of good.

The picture shows a group of members of the Lebanese colony in Kumasi in front of their club building, at a reception in honor of Lebanon's Consul General, Sheikh Edmond Raffoul, who stands in the middle of the front row.
