Society News (A Wedding — In Memory of Ahmad Samih al-Khalidi)

★ At an elegant party that gathered a choice company of friends, the marriage of Miss Samira Fadli to the young Samih Darwazeh was contracted last month.

Miss Fadli holds the B.A. degree in history and politics, and Mr. Darwazeh has not yet finished his study of pharmacy... Their acquaintance was made in the atmosphere of the American University of Beirut, and it ended in the best ending to which lofty and noble aims can come.

And we, who value in Mr. Darwazeh his sound taste, congratulate the young bride and groom and wish them a happy life founded on true understanding and mutual love.

★ The Alumni Association of the American University of Beirut held at West Hall a commemoration of the great educator and departed fighter, Mr. Ahmad Samih al-Khalidi. It was a solemn ceremony in which all circles took part, official circles at their head.

The ceremony opened with the recitation of verses of the Wise Remembrance; then Messrs. Muhyi al-Din al-Nasuli, Abdallah al-Alayli, Said Akl, Nicola Ziadeh, and Ishaq Musa al-Husseini, Dr. Zahia Kaddoura, and the president of the University, Dr. Stephen Penrose, spoke, recounting the departed's good works and his patriotic stands, and paying tribute to his efforts in the field of sound education and true building.

The ceremony included an anthem by the choir of the Islamic Orphanage, with words by Mr. "Abu Layla" and music by Mr. Khalid Abi al-Nasr.

There were read at the ceremony an address by Dr. Fadil Jamali, and an address by Mr. Fuad Sarruf, who proposed the creation of a special fund in the name of Ahmad Samih al-Khalidi for the education of a young man at the University, to be chosen by a committee formed for this purpose. Mr. Sarruf opened the subscription to this fund by paying five hundred Lebanese lira.

It was announced at the ceremony that the Lebanese government had conferred upon the departed the Order of Merit, in appreciation of him.

At the close of the commemoration Mr. Usama, the departed's son, spoke, thanking those present, the Alumni Association, and the speakers.
