The Society for the Protection of Lebanese Children

جمعية حماية الأطفال اللبنانيين

* The society for the 'Protection of Lebanese Children,' attached to the Lebanese Red Cross, celebrated Child Week in the last week of this past March, presenting over Radio Lebanon a series of talks bringing out the importance of this yearly occasion and the far-reaching humane aims behind it, and directing Lebanese public opinion to the importance of 'Child Week' and 'Child Day' and the sanctity of its meaning in the hearts of all citizens.
Taking part in the 'Child Week' programs over Radio Lebanon, in turn, were: Miss Rose Hawi, Mrs. Ellen Rihan, Mr. Ghassan Tueni, Dr. Jamal Karam Harfush, Mesdames Asma Tubi and Edvick Jureidini Shayboub, and Mr. Rashid Shoucair. They divided among themselves the chief branches of the subject, each according to his specialty, setting forth the duty of the government, the municipalities, and the people toward the child, and how all may work together for the good of this small great creature.
Child Week in Lebanon closed with 'Child Day,' on which troops of young girls and young men went out into the streets, pinning the badges of the 'Child Protection' society on the breasts of passers-by in return for whatever piasters their hands and hearts freely gave — sums to be set aside afterward for the relief of hundreds of children in the three children's homes belonging to this society. These donations will later be turned into clothing to ward the harshness of the cold off the children, a nourishing morsel in their mouths, a book in their hands, and treatment in their times of sickness.
The society for the 'Protection of Lebanese Children' has shown, truth be told, ever since its founding in 1948, a distinguished activity, widening the circle of its work and caring for its three homes in the best manner — thanks to the energy of its president, Mrs. Malaki Haik, and its zealous, active members, among whom we single out Mrs. Marie Siriani, who, with her companions, spares no effort in offering every help and making every sacrifice, however dear... in return for an innocent smile of contentment bestowed by the mouth of a wretched childhood!!
