The Salma Sayegh Chair at the Lebanese University

كرسي سلمى صائغ في الجامعة اللبنانية

The magazine "The Woman's Voice" regrets the lukewarm response with which Mrs. Zahia Salman's project for the creation of a permanent university chair in the name of "Salma Sayegh" has been met.

The committee approached Mr. Fuad Efram al-Bustani, president of the Lebanese University, and laid the project before him; it met with his full interest, and he promised at once to set aside a permanent chair in the department of Arabic literature to be called: the "Salma Sayegh Chair." It is to be obtained only by her who receives the necessary recommendation from the supervisory committee, after the candidate has passed an examination prepared for this purpose and given proof of linguistic and literary competence.

The Woman's Voice therefore offers its thanks to the president of the Lebanese University for his kindness and his encouragement, and it is pleased to establish this good relationship at the outset of the University's life, to grow as it grows; and perhaps, in consequence, there will rise up for us a company of women of letters marching forward, drawing their inspiration from the departed writer Salma Sayegh...

A good word must also be said for the positive zeal with which the project was met among certain individuals; we single out Mr. Hamid Baqi, who donated fifty Lebanese liras, and likewise Mrs. Evelyn Hitti Kanaan, who donated ten liras. To both go the committee's sincerest thanks.
