The Young Women's Christian Association: A Lecture by Mr. Raji al-Rai

الجمعية المسيحية للشابات: محاضرة الاستاذ راجي الراعي

• At noon on Wednesday, the 24th of this month, the Young Women's Christian Association opened its series of monthly lectures, to which it has been accustomed in the past to invite the refined élite of the Lebanese; they are delivered after a luncheon at the Association's headquarters...

The first lecturer was the Attorney General of the Lebanese Republic, Mr. Raji al-Rai, who improvised a lecture on the subject 'Views on Woman,' in which he set out his opinion of woman in her present struggle — what stands against her and what stands to her credit... He soared in describing her as mother, wife, nurse, inspirer of poets, and guardian of beauty and art.. Then he warned her off joining in politics, or in commercial, sporting, or scientific affairs — claiming that those pursuits, beset as they are with difficulties, "stain her embroidered gown, and scatter the beads of her necklace!"

The luncheon of the Young Women's Christian Association was attended by more than a hundred personalities, men and women, and on their faces showed the joy and good cheer of the gathering; they praised the Association, which prepares the way for such pleasant family gatherings, spreading sociability and the spirit of cooperation among those present — and in our next issue we shall publish the text of Mr. Raji al-Rai's address.
