Of Whom Do You Dream?

Asma Minti

بمن تحلمين ؟ · أسمة منتي

*

Shattered arrows came tumbling
over the raging seas...
The waters shivered
and the waves thundered...
What, I wonder, are they thinking of...
and of whom do they dream, those sick eyelids?...

*

What fiery thought
passed over the waters and set them ablaze?
And what jinn-born phantom
brushed the waves and threw them into panic?
And what newborn hope
was sent out to the seas
and stirred in them a buried selflessness?
Would that I knew of whom you dream, O sick
eyelids!

*

Is it a night brimming with love
that you remember?...
Or the phantom of a far-off beloved
with whom you commune?...
Is it with longing toward a recent past
that you gaze?...
Or is it for an unknown tomorrow
that you yearn?...
Would that I knew of whom you dream?...
