I Want to Weep

Musa Sulayman

أريد أن أبكي · موسى سليمان

Wipe my heart with your light, O Jesus,
for it is dark as the night, breathing out blackness

★

You were born, O Jesus...
and the light of knowledge shone forth;
but I, Man,
clothed myself in shame and disgrace

★

I slaughtered, that you might be,
a thousand victims and one more...
and raised to the seven heavens
my fervent prayers...

And I gave myself anew to a thousand gods and one more,
and stood in the temple, humble, chanting,
shaking from me my sins and my transgressions...
until, when the miracle was accomplished
and I was...
I went back to my beastliness,
and there came back to my soul its fierce yearning
for the new...

for another Jesus
born as you were born
of fire and light,
of the foam of the waves
and the fragrance of the hills,
of... our country

★

I loved you, O Jesus,
and I denied you;
so give me, beloved Child,
on the day of your wondrous birth,
the strength....

that perhaps I may be able to weep!
