Mrs. Rose Farah Maalouf in Lebanon

السيدة روز فرح معلوف في لبنان

A gracious guest, Mrs. Rose Maalouf has alighted amid the haunts of kin and homeland, after an absence of seventeen years in Brazil. The Woman's Voice is happy to seize this occasion to welcome the wife of the Mahjar poet, Mr. Chafic Maalouf, and to wish her a pleasant stay and a happy time.

Mrs. Maalouf presides over the "Cedar of Lebanon" Society for child welfare — any child's welfare. She spoke to us of the community in Brazil, saying:

Ours is not the only institution; the Lebanese-Syrian community is an active one, and maintains several societies and clubs. Yet we have not wholly melted into the local crucible — I mean the land of the Mahjar — and we still feel ourselves strangers despite the length of time we have dwelt there. But the new generation truly holds its head high: we see our girls and our young men ever in the vanguard of learning and work, with no one outstripping them in any field.

As for the renaissance of the Lebanese woman in the homeland, it is a step on which she truly deserves congratulation. I have felt a palpable change between the time I left the country and now, and this activity encourages us, her sisters in the Mahjar, to follow her example.

• Mrs. Eileen Boutros Abi Abdallah, one of this magazine's supporters in the Mahjar and one of the ladies active in the social and humanitarian field, has returned to Mexico after a visit to Lebanon.

During her stay of four months amid the haunts of the mother country, she was the guest of her kinsman, Dr. Tawfiq Karam.
