The Party of the "Ladies of the Mar Elias Orphanage"

حفلة «سيدات ميتم مار الياس»

The hall of the Saint-Georges was packed on Sunday night, May 12, with a great crowd of Beirutis at the grand ball to which the "Ladies of the Mar Elias Orphanage" society, presided over by Mrs. Hortense Tamer, had issued its invitation.

The truth is that the ball met with dazzling success, thanks to the high zeal and boundless activity with which the members of the society worked in preparation for it. A pleasant surprise was the announcement of "fortunes read in the bottom of the coffee cup," as well as the arts of the lottery... And it was a stirring sight, the ladies going out at the end of the night carrying bundles and boxes — everything under the sun!!

I said the ball was a success: several official personalities presided at the table of honor, and the circles of dancing turned with rapture and enthusiasm until the break of dawn..

It remains to mention that a quarter of the party's proceeds goes, as it does every year, to the orphanage's innocent little ones. In the care of the capable, tender-hearted directress, Miss Ramza Karaoglan, they feel neither orphanhood nor humiliation.
