Organizing the Ranks of the Lebanese in Support of Sister Egypt

In the middle of last November, delegates of some thirty organizations and associations met at the Teachers' Syndicate Club, in response to the invitation addressed by the Association of Graduates of Egyptian Universities and Higher Institutes in Lebanon to the cultural, social, and charitable organizations and associations:

Those present discussed how to achieve the purpose of this meeting and to provide financial and medical aid to sister Egypt in the present circumstances. After the meeting had lasted three hours, the following was resolved:

First — The formation of "the National Committee for the Support of Egypt."

Second — The issuing of an appeal to the Lebanese — individuals, institutions, companies, and organizations — to take part in this noble work.

Third — The sending of a telegram to His Excellency President Gamal Abdel Nasser in support of Egypt.

Fourth — The naming of His Excellency the Prime Minister Rashid Karami as president, Muhyi al-Din Bawwab as secretary, Hassan al-Ladiqi as treasurer, and Abd al-Rahman Qaranful as accountant.

Fifth — The formation of a finance committee of the following ladies and gentlemen: Nazik al-Abid Beyhum, Wadi'a Kaddoura Khartabil, Munira Shehadeh, Marie Tabet, Abd al-Rahman Qaranful, Hassan al-Ladiqi.

Sixth — The formation of a publicity committee of the following ladies and gentlemen: Dr. Zahia Kaddoura, Hind Ghandour Hashash, Majida Attar, Dr. Amin al-Hafez, Evelyn Homsi, Zafer Tamim, Hassan al-Ladiqi.

Seventh — The formation of a committee for organization, administration, and planning of the following ladies and gentlemen: Zahia Salman, Aisha Jaroudi, Saniyya Adham, George Karam, Mustafa Zaydan, Jamil Kabbi, Muhammad Kishli, Ahmad Munaymina; this committee is granted the right to add three delegates to cooperate with them.

No sooner had the committees been elected and the tasks distributed than every member sprang to organized work; the committees set about performing their duties with zeal and vigor, and the collection of donations from official institutions and from private homes was begun at once. Ranks of students, young men and women, went forth knocking on doors and rousing generous spirits to stand with Egypt in her great ordeal — an ordeal that has carried off thousands of righteous martyrs and filled the hospitals with wounded, most of them women and children!

The work of "the National Committee" is an honorable patriotic work that deserves every solidarity and support.
