From the Inspiration of the Family

Almas al-Duwayk

من وحي العائلة · الماس دويك

You dyed my youth with hopes and promises;
you stirred my heart while it was bewildered,
astray,
building longing upon her love, begging of you
bounty.

Bravo to you...
How did you kindle in me an ardor for work?...
Then fill my tongue with force in argument?..
You made of my imagination a garden of velvet
where anthems of eternity rise in its wilds.

How did you gather up my sash?!..
How did you set free my wing?!

You are a meaning for my being, and then my repose,
and songs adorned by the soft cadence of a lute.

You are a cradle for my sons and daughters,
the secret of my faith in the self's immortality after death,
a flood of the rapture of living.

It wraps the universe in an overflow of life and eternity —
and I!!! — the human being — how enduring...
So my love and my loyalty, my striving and my devotion
are for you!! O smile of my life and my happiness,
you!! O my lam and my ba,
for you have given life to my abiding in existence.
