Near Distances — Shadow

Layla Abu Dahir

أبعاد قريبة - ظلّ · ليلى ابو ضاهر

This young, elegant pen is trying to cut itself a new path, among the virgin roses, in the world of letters! Who, one wonders, whispered to the sweet young girl the songs of her tenderly feeling heart?

Do not be a shadow that follows me, for I have grown weary of the mute shadows that occupy no space in existence and yet are always there... covering an expanse — and solid bodies could occupy that expanse...

Someone — who could it have been? — asked me about you today.
"There he is, walking amid pain..."
I answered...

Who, in God's name, drove the pain away?..

A love that floods the earth, plays with the red autumn leaf and makes it die content, so that a flower not yet born may know bliss..

And a death that consumed the body and lodged the soul in the stillness of eternity...

And a revolt — we see it in the sea at the year's beginning... washing the haughty stones with its salt water...

In you there is love and revolt, and death too, as though you were a piece of life...

And life is this existence...

So will you not be for me a light that creates my shadow?!
