Talk of the Heart

Your eyes!...
Your eyes, the seafaring pair —
the deepest sea.. the dewiest tenderness,
winter shadows, roaring, restless,
slipping on the brink of the lashes —
and do they tell? —
An arm, reaching out with open palm,
and drawing back!
Folding in upon themselves
... wanting!
And what an impregnable wall stands before what they want!

Your eyes!
Who said I know their color?
Who said I understand their essence,
and can draw out their secrets?
A heap of cares and sorrows, branded, tightly stacked
in the crater of a volcano.
Now it erupts, hurling lava and poisons,
and now it quiets — and then what green dreams and promises
glow and seethe and surge
in those far-reaching depths
of those two oases!!

Your eyes!
A warm riddle... a mirage, an illusion
that tickles my heart — wakens it,
and there comes within it... a handful of sorrow —
snatching me away... clouding my night.
I wish I could wipe them away with my hope,
... and run,
breast bared... hair streaming,
to where they cannot pursue me,
by night and by day..
Your eyes!
