In Society — To the Noble Citizen Mrs. Laure Tabet

في المجتمعات - إلى المواطنة الكريمة السيدة لور ثابت · زاهية دوغان

In the momentous electoral round that Lebanon witnessed last month, no one of the fair sex entered the battle except Mrs. Laure Georges Tabet, president of the League of Women's Organizations in Lebanon. The voters, men and women alike, failed her; but she came out of the field with clean hands and an unblemished brow, having disdained the cheap propaganda methods that most of the candidates lavished. On this occasion, Miss Zahiyah Dughan addressed this letter to Mrs. Laure Tabet, saying:

'What inspires pride and admiration is your boundless ambition and your unequaled courage in what you undertook — plunging into the fray of the parliamentary elections to fill the void that woman had left. I believe that you have raised the head of the Lebanese woman high, strengthened her standing, paved for her the paths of elevation and progress, and opened before her the field of high service in all the facilities of political and civil life, on an equal footing with her brother, man.

It is a blessed step that inspires optimism, and though you did not attain your hopes in it completely, it is nonetheless a mighty leap that testifies to your lofty spirit and the sincerity of your resolve. And as I congratulate you on these efforts, I in turn reproach the woman who fell short in supporting you and was lax in her duty toward giving you the first place that befits you, as an exemplary leader of the women's renaissance. May she feel this shortcoming and prepare to make it good in the coming electoral round.
