A Remembrance — To the One Who Went Away One July and Did Not Return

To the one who went away one July and did not return

Your memory in my mind, my beloved,
is a flash of winter lightning
gleaming in my glowering sky.
It fills its expanses with rapture
... and in the twinkling of an eye, the light is blotted out.
Darkness closes over the horizon —
The rains pour down, roaring, streaming —
Black thunders and black storms
break loose, wailing and striking down.
And the phantoms loom, winged upon blindness,
flailing, and the trees
one against another
in the pitch-black gloom

XXXX

And morning rises clean of face, easy of mind
The waters seep deep into the veins of the earth
... and there return, with spring, to the meadows
their freshness and their bright colors.
It seems to me, my beloved,
that on the mouths of the blossoms is something like your smile
and in their virgin fragrance the character of your breath
And I stand there long, on the joyous hillock,
yearning, bewildered,
searching for my soul, which I lost
the day I lost you!
