The Gala Dinner of the Lebanese University Women

The Golden Hall of the Bristol Hotel was packed, on the evening of the twenty-third of last November, for the gala dinner organized by the Association of Lebanese University Women, headed by Dr. Edma Abouchdid.

The party was held under the patronage of His Excellency the Prime Minister Mr. Sami Solh and in the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Education Mr. Farid Qozma, the presidents of the American University of Beirut and of Beirut College for Women, and other official and civic personalities. What distinguished the company was that all present were of the cultivated, refined elite of this country.. For that reason the dancing circles did not grow boisterous as they do at ordinary parties; instead, all eyes turned to this blessed company of university women — physician, lawyer, professor, and journalist — working with one hand and one heart, in a purely scientific spirit, far removed from political and social wrangling.

During the party a drawing was held for a large number of valuable prizes donated by the friends of the association, men and women, foremost among them the First Lady of Lebanon, Mrs. Chamoun; and it was noticed that most of the prizes had a cultural or artistic character in harmony with the spirit of the association and its mission.

And if the aim of the evening was to spread word of the Lebanese university women in refined circles and to obtain some of the money necessary to carry on their work, we can state with assurance that the party was highly successful and yielded the best of results, thanks to the excellent feminine elements who cooperated in organizing it and in looking after the guests with all the taste and graciousness that the Lebanese woman possesses.
