Among Their Achievements

من مآثرهن

The universities of Oxford and Cambridge have recently honored two women by raising them to the rank of professor. The first is Dr. Ida Mann, professor of ophthalmology at Oxford, and the second is Miss Butler, professor of the German language at Cambridge University.

Dr. Ida Mann is considered a distinguished specialist in ophthalmology, and her brilliant work is recognized in all parts of the world. She will work at Oxford in the laboratory attached to the new research department devoted to ophthalmology.

Her wide fame rests on her discoveries concerning the early development of the eye. Her forthcoming research will deal with the nutrition of sight, for it is believed that a deficiency in the mother's diet may be a cause of weak eyesight in small children.

Miss Butler is a graduate of Newnham College, Cambridge, and professor of German literature at Victoria, Manchester. She will begin her new work next October.

It is worth mentioning that the first lady to obtain a professorship at either of these two great British universities was Miss Garrod, who was appointed professor of archaeology at Cambridge in 1939.
