For Elegance

في سبيل الأناقة

If a sudden change appears in your face, or wrinkles, or an unnatural redness, it comes from the burning heat of the sun. To remove it, use Pond's cream through the eight hours of sleep, for it soothes the heat of the skin without making it harsh.

If you wish to go on with your holiday and your exposure to the sun's heat, wipe your face with a special solution that will protect you from burning.

Your face may also fall prey to the wrinkles of advancing age, or of a disorder in the working of the liver. If the latter is the cause, keep away from tea, coffee, and drinks for a while, and take a cup of hot water on rising from sleep. You should follow a special regimen, and take certain kinds of foods which the doctor will prescribe for you.

The hand that grows dry in summer aches. So raise your hands above your head when the heat grows intense, to prevent the congestion caused by the blood seeping into them. And if you are beside a table, place your elbows upon it and rest your chin on your palms — for this way of sitting helps you greatly to lessen the pain of dryness.

Sweating of the hands often results from nervous excitement, for the secreting glands in the hands and feet are affected by the lymphatic nerve. To lessen the heat, use vinegar or any cooling solution, and take care to practice constantly the mastery of your nerves by the strength of your will.

You often feel a strong heat in summer. This heat comes, as a rule, from your shoes. Shoes with low heels, open at the front and the back, are what you ought to wear. And when you are at home, lie on your back and raise your legs a little upward, for that helps to rest them.

In severe heat your feet profit greatly from two baths a day: one the ordinary bath you take every day, and the other a special bath mixed with a solution of permanganate, cologne, and salicylic acid at two percent. This bath rests your feet and renews their vigor.
