The Game of Fate

Fahima Hakim

لعبة القدر · فهيمة حكيم

On the sprawling shore of life...
and near the towering rock of fate...
the youth stood, gazing, lost in thought!
The waves, clashing, roar and rage.
The winds, violent, toy and tyrannize...
Memories of the past...
the angry deep swallows them...
and the hopes of the future...
the clamoring winds scatter them!

Woe to him!
There goes the boat of the days...
speeding away with his promised happiness,
folding his dreams...
in a deep abyss!
He called to it, begging mercy...
despair having made him hoarse...
and implored it, beseeching...
pain having made him weep.
How???

Do the days fold his happiness in their folds,
and does the deep sink his hopes in its depths?
Can he not follow after their traces,
and catch a glimpse of their lights?
Will they never return?

And are they lost to him forever?

He fell, collapsing...
and struck against the rock of fate...
and from its cruel depths...

he heard a loud burst of laughter
and a pealing voice that said:
"Fate plays on... while you stand heedless..."
