Two Waves

Jareer Abu-Haidar

"I Transgressed"

I transgressed, and said to the world: I have transgressed,
and I told the morning what I had done,
and I called out to the evening, and when it saw me
I flung my heart to it, and rose.
But the darkness met me with a face of doubt,
as though it had never seen what I had seen;
so I set my veins aflame and roamed within it,
that it might behold what I unfurled and what I folded.

"I Soared"

I soared, and said: O my Lord, I have soared,
and hoped for nothing but the courts of Your throne.
Here is my breast, surging, and within it
nothing but Your remembrance — melodies and voice.
Despite the clay I lifted my gaze to You,
and in its dark unknown I dispelled my doubt.
I have trodden the dust, and trodden my own grave —
what then is a shroud, what a grave, what death!
