Miss Samira Assi Nominated for the "Salma Sayegh" Seat

ترشيح الانسة سميرة عاصي لمقعد «سلمى صائغ»

The readers of The Woman's Voice no doubt remember Mrs. Zahia Salman's proposal aiming to immortalize the memory of the late woman of letters Salma Sayegh, and to discover the literary talents among our girls. The Woman's Voice noted this proposal at the time; and the esteemed al-Hayat likewise praised it and called for its support. In a past issue we reported the meeting held between Mr. Fuad al-Boustani, President of the Lebanese University, and Mrs. Salman and Mrs. Shayboub, and we noted the agreement reached among them — an agreement providing that the permanent study seat bearing the name "Salma Sayegh" be established at the Lebanese University, to be awarded to the girl student excelling in letters.

This month a committee was formed, composed of Mmes. Salman, Shayboub, Kanaan, and Rihani, which has taken upon itself to watch over the carrying out of the said proposal and to publicize it. This committee called on Mr. al-Boustani a second time, and he informed it that he was nominating Miss Samira Assi for the "Salma Sayegh" seat. Those present agreed that alongside this seat there should be established at the Lebanese University a rostrum bearing the departed lady's name as well, from which three lectures on women's literature would be delivered yearly, to be printed and distributed. It was decided that the committee should prepare registers and receipt books to collect the necessary funds from "Salma's" friends and admirers. The committee has set about its work, and we for our part hope that its efforts, and the aim it pursues, will meet with the success they deserve — and with the needed response that its first campaign failed to find.
