The Zahle Child Nursery Party

حفلة حضانة الطفل الزحلية

The Child Nursery Society, through the energy of its president, Mrs. Emily Nasrallah, has shown great activity during the past month. It held a grand ball, under the patronage of the Lebanese press, for which it prepared every element of merriment and diversion, so that it became the ornament of the season's parties. At the head of the table of honor sat the leading journalists, who played the part of the jury for the election of the queen of beauty queens from among a bevy of lovely young ladies who entered the contest. Miss Hind al-Sakkaf won the title, and won as well a thousand lira, two round-trip tickets to Europe... and a number of ladies' articles and luxuries. Amal Salam and Ramona Awad were elected maids of honor to Her Majesty the Queen. During the evening there was also a sale by auction; one of the precious pieces put up at auction was from the workshop of Mrs. Aida Labaki, and it set a record. Donations, too, reached their peak: Sheikh Abdullah al-Sabah donated ten thousand lira, and some Saudi emirs donated five thousand lira...

The second party, which the society held in honor of Sheikh Abdullah al-Jaber and his wife the Emira Layla, was among the finest of parties; several official personalities attended it, and His Grace Bishop Saba delivered an eloquent address. The gracious speech of the society's president came as the close of that party — in it she expressed the society's thanks to those beneficent hands that do not forget, in the fullness of their happiness, the orphans and the deprived.
