Laughter

By JOUMANA AHDAB

I hate tears; only your laughter
Stirs my passion,
Ardent laughter, cruel laughter,
In a flash, crimson and white
In the autumn light.
The sun kindles golden drops
In your transparent eyes.
Dead leaves whirl
In flaming flashes
You do not know how to weep
But you know so well how to laugh.
With your sharp teeth and your cruel eyes,
Laughter bright as a tear
And hoarse as a sob.
The trees have shed their shimmering finery.
From the soil gorged with water
And strewn with old gold
Rises a vague odor of decay
The mad wind gathers this faded perfume....
You do not know how to weep.
But in the half-light of this autumn tangle
Where glaucous and bronze gleams are kindled,
Your laughter bursts out like a red wound....
