Masterpieces of Art — Eve

Eve — or say rather the story of Adam and Eve — has been a living wellspring for men of art, who have exercised all the invention their creative power allowed in depicting the expulsion of the first parents from Paradise.

Among the most famous paintings representing this story is the one that Michelangelo left on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.

And Raphael left an unfinished painting of the story of the expulsion from Paradise.

...And to this day this story still tempts painters and sculptors to portray it, now in colors, now with the chisel.

And this magnificent statue of Eve in the Louvre Museum represents this human tragedy...

Eve weeps, bitten by despair and remorse...

Her head is on her knee, buried in her hands, and in her posture is revealed all the meaning of deep pain and gnawing bitterness...

And in her slackened hands is the meaning of surrender and despair...

And the accursed serpent, which represents Satan, appears in the lower part of the picture.
